2008 News Archive - Holidays - Grand Canyon is Wonder of Nature contender

07 02 2008

The Grand Canyon is a "likely contender" in the race to become a New Seventh Wonder of Nature, it has been revealed.

Grand Canyon Resort Corporation, owned by the Hualapai Tribe, reports that event organisers believe that the Grand Canyon is a possible favourite for the New Seven Wonders of Nature title, which officially starts in January 2009.

Other proposed contenders include Mount Fuji, the Great Barrier Reef, Mount Everest, Victoria Falls and the Amazon Rainforest.

More than six million years old, the Grand Canyon can be found in Arizona, not far from the city of Las Vegas in the US.

Measuring more than 446 kilometres long the Grand Canyon ranges in width from six to 29 kilometres and its depth reaches in excess of 1.6 kilometres.

Holidaymakers can walk on The Skywalk for views of the below Hudson River or take a helicopter ride to see the Grand Canyon from the air.
