2008 News Archive - Holidays - Half-term holidaymakers urged to check EHICs
14 10 2008
Families travelling to winter sun destinations over half-term have been urged to check that their European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are in date.
Speaking today (October 14th), the Department of Health said that 1.5 million EHICs are due to expire before the end of the month, with millions more set to expire before May 2009.
Paul Siddell, overseas healthcare programme manager at the Department of Health, commented: "Many Brits are putting themselves at unnecessary risk by not checking their EHIC expiry date. If you're travelling in Europe it's vital that you carry an EHIC, as well as comprehensive travel insurance."
EHICs can be used in most European countries to cover the cost of any emergency medical treatment.
Holidaymakers can apply for the cards online, or by telephone.
In related news, more than 15 million Britons are planning to jet to warmer climes this autumn, according to a recent survey by Abbey.
