2008 News Archive - Holidays - Have a revolutionary trip

29 10 2007

Those who visit Mexico may like to enjoy the sunshine and the beaches, but taking a trip to Mexico City on November 20th is a great way to connect with the history and culture of the country.

On this date Mexico celebrates Revolution Day, commemorating the overthrowing of the dictatorship of General Porfirio Diaz in 1910.

A ruthless ruler who suppressed any uprisings against his junta, General Diaz was finally expelled when Francisco Madero's rebels fought a successful civil war campaign and liberated the country.

Anyone in the city will thus be able to enjoy a display of patriotic fervour and military parades as the country marks this key date in its history.

Mexico City is one of the largest centres of population in the world and its attractions include the huge Azteca Stadium, which has twice hosted football's World Cup Final, as well as being the scene of Diego Maradona's "hand of God" goal against England in 1986.
