2008 News Archive - Holidays - Have a whale (shark) of a time!

17 10 2007

The season for whale shark diving in Kenya starts in February so it's time to start planning that trip.

Diani Beach and other selected locations such as Malindi and Watumu offer fabulous once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to get close up and personal with the world's largest sharks.

According to whatsonwhen.com, Diani offers an easy surface drift that is essential for experiencing close encounters with the creatures, nicknamed Papa Shillingi by local people.

According to educational website Enchanted Learning, the mouth of the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) can measure up to 1.4 metres wide.

It has recognisable light yellow markings in random stripes and dots on its thick, dark grey skin and three prominent ridges running along each side of its body.

As in most sharks, the females are larger than the males.

Coastlines on the Indian Ocean are prime locations to see these creatures in their natural habitats and sightings off Kenya have become more frequent in recent years.
