01 05 2008

The US department of commerce has announced that 3.4 million international visitors took flights to the States in January 2008, an 11 per cent growth on the number of foreign travellers that took holidays in the US in January 2007.

Meanwhile, spending by international visitors also rose by 23 per cent on the same period in 2007, with tourists spending a record $11.38 billion (£5.7 billion) in the first month of 2008.

Arrivals from the UK rose by almost six per cent in January of this year, "following solid growth in 2007".

UK tourists accounted for 39 per cent of all the Western European arrivals to the States.

The news comes after Post Office noted that the US has overtaken eurozone resorts to become the one of the cheapest destinations surveyed in its annual Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer.

In its 2008 report, the cost of a bottle of Coca-Cola in Florida is £1.60, compared with £2.94 in France.
