Britons are increasingly using the information superhighway to book their holidays, it has emerged.

Recent research from the Association of British Travel Agents reveals 57 per cent of people booked their last holiday abroad over the internet, TravelMole reports.

This compares to 27 per cent who did so in person with a travel agent and 19 per cent who used the telephone.

A total 68 per cent of holidaymakers aged 25-44 booked their last holiday online.

Further analysis of the survey results revealed 35 per cent of people booked their foreign trips through a travel agent, while 16 per cent opted to use an operator.

Some travellers preferred to go it alone, with 21 per cent going directly to an airline, 19 per cent booking via a website and 12 per cent contacting a hotel.

Last month, American Express warned some Britons may consider travelling without insurance as a result of the economic downturn, which could prove costly if something goes wrong.
