2008 News Archive - Holidays - Holidays considered necessity, not a luxury, says expert

23 12 2008

An industry insider has said that most Brits now consider their summer holidays to be an essential part of their life, rather than an extravagance they could do without.

According to Tim Williamson, customer director at Thomson & First Choice, "summer holidays are no longer considered a luxury, but a necessity".

He added: "This is reflected in the continued popularity of the standard package holiday in 2009."

Mr Williamson predicted that Italy and the Algarve would be among the most popular short-haul destinations next year, while Mexico, Florida and the Canary islands would prove popular long-haul destinations.

Recently Ian Bradley, a spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators, predicted that Brits propensity to view holidays as essential would mean most will not cut out their holidays as a way of saving money during the credit crunch.
