Brit holidaymakers obsessed with celebrity culture are choosing their holiday destinations based on locations chosen by the stars, according to lastminute.com.

Managing director of lastminute.com John Bevan states searches for more exotic locations such as the Maldives have increased due to celebrity hype. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes chose to honeymoon in the Maldives last year.

"With the all the interest surrounding celebrities we have definitely seen an increase in searches particularly for destinations frequented by the rich and famous," Mr Bevan comments.

He also notes that Los Angeles has received more interest from British holidaymakers after the media furore created by the Beckham family as they relocate to the glamorous celebrity hotspot.

Recent research by the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has found the Med is still number one for UK sun-seekers but new far-flung destinations have become desirable for more adventurous travellers. Abta claims internet holiday booking sites have taken travel prospects into "an expanded universe".
