British consumers will continue to travel abroad, despite the credit crunch, one expert has claimed.

Francesco Frangialli, secretary-general of the UN World Tourism Organisation, said he was confident that the demand for travel would continue.

Speaking to the United Federation of Travel Agents' Associations Mr Frangialli said: "Experience teaches us that tourism is resilient … The need to go on trips, to take holidays, is too strong in our post-industrial societies."

He said that instead of curtailing travel, Britons were changing their habits and, for example, opting to travel with family and friends in order to keep costs to a minimum.

More than 900 million people travelled during 2007 and that figure looks set to increase to 1.1 billion in 2010, according to Mr Frangialli.

In related news, a recent survey by tripAdvisor found that 56 per cent of Britons are planning to increase their holiday spending over the coming year.
