2008 News Archive - Holidays - Iata looks to improve African air safety

10 04 2008

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) is looking to enhance aviation safety in Africa, it has announced.

Giovanni Bisignani, director general of Iata, noted that this move is inline with its Implementation Plan for Safe Operations in Africa (Ipsoa).

Ipsoa is a $3.7 million (£1.5 million) programme that gives up to 30 African airlines access to Iata's Flight Data Analysis tool over the course of three years.

"African safety has improved, but the accident rate is still nearly six times the global average. This must change. Iata is serious about delivering results that will raise the bar on aviation safety," Mr Bisignani insisted.

He added that Egypt and Madagascar are already authorising the Iata Operational Safety Audit as part of their safety programmes, while Mr Bisignani hopes that more African governments follow this example.

Following violence in Kenya at the beginning of the year, travel restrictions have now been partially relaxed, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advising against all but essential travel to only parts of Kenya now.
