Expectations were exceeded in terms of tourism growth in 2007, it has been announced.

According to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals achieved record growth during the last 12 months, surpassing official predictions.

The UNWTO World Tourism Barometer revealed that international tourist arrivals registered 898 million in 2007, a growth of six percent on 2006 figures and representative of an additional 52 million people venturing abroad.

"While mature markets remain the leading destinations in the world, the faster growth rate of new markets confirms UNWTO's main message of tourism's potential for the developing world," commented UNWTO secretary-general Francesco Frangialli.

The largest percentage increase was seen in the Middle East, where international tourist numbers visiting locations such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia grew by 13 per cent.

Europe remained the most popular holiday destination in terms of global tourism with 480 million international visitors heading to the region in 2007.

"Strong" growth was reported in Italy, Greece, Portugal, Turkey and Switzerland.
