22 02 2007

Spain is continuing to attract international tourists in their millions, reiterating its reputation as one of the world's top holiday destinations.

Citing figures from the Ministry of the Interior, Typically Spanish reveals that 2.8 million people visited Spain in January, representing an increase of four per cent on last year's figure.

The Canary Islands remain exceptionally popular with overseas visitors, according to the statistics. More than 800,000 people visited the Canaries from abroad, which compares to 613,000 who visited Catalonia.

A further 430,000 went to Andalucia, while the increasingly popular Valencia welcomed almost 272,000.

Madrid, Spain's capital city, accommodated 267,000 overseas visitors, after an increase of 11.3 per cent from last year.

The Balearics also saw an increase in visitor numbers, with the 1.2 per cent rise taking the total to 150,000.

Castile and Leon, in the north-west of the country, experienced a staggering 17.5 per cent increase in visitor numbers during January, suggesting that this is one of the country's up-and-coming destinations.
