2008 News Archive - Holidays - Kenya's key tourist areas "unaffected"

03 01 2008

Despite recent volatility in western areas of Kenya, tour operators have advised the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) that the country's main tourist areas remain unaffected.

The news comes after Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki's re-election was disputed by opposition leader Raila Odinga, resulting in protesting and reported violence in some areas of the country.

However, the main tourist operators in Kenya have informed Abta that holiday programmes are continuing to function in the country as planned.

According to Abta, the operators have made this decision based on a number of factors. They claim no holidaymakers have requested to return home and that transfers to and from airports in Mombassa and Nairobi are secure.

Additionally, it is reported that affected areas are largely confined to areas of high-density low-income urban housing in the west of the country.

While the situation is being closely monitored, operators note that roads to major tourist attractions are all open.
