2008 News Archive - Holidays - Long-haul hols 'affect travel insurance'

25 01 2008

Travellers taking long-haul holidays to exotic destinations should be aware that such journeys can affect their travel insurance, it has been announced.

According to STA Travel, there is more risk involved with "any" long-haul holiday as they are more expensive.

A spokesperson for the company noted that as a far-flung holiday costs more than a trip to Europe, it is also likely to be more expensive to cancel.

"Long-haul trips also mean more expensive repatriation costs if the passenger has to be flown back to the UK," she added.

The news comes after a July 2005 Mintel Gap Year Report showed that gap year travel is the fastest growing travel sector of the millennium, with predictions suggesting that the global gap year market will swell to roughly £11 billion by 2010.

The expansion of budget airlines has helped open up long-haul travel to a wider range of passengers, commentators have observed.
