2008 News Archive - Holidays - Maldives is 'most popular long-haul destination'

04 02 2009

The Maldives was the most popular long-haul destination of 2008, new research has revealed.

According to the Kuoni long-haul report, the Indian Ocean archipelago has continued to attract tourists in droves, despite the ongoing credit crunch.

The travel organisation predicts that the Maldives, which is a favourite with honeymooning couples, will retain its top spot status for 2009.

Kunoi described the Maldives as "paradise islands scattered across the Indian Ocean", adding: "It's the embodiment of barefoot luxury."

Nick Hughes, the managing director of the travel firm, said that tourists are increasingly looking for a more complete package form their holidays, which they can find in places like the Maldives.

He explained: "Travel is no longer just a holiday choice. It impacts our lifestyle, stimulates our wellbeing and influences our fashion, design and food choices."

Recently, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay told the Telegraph that the Maldives is his favourite place for romantic breaks with his wife, Tana.
