2008 News Archive - Holidays - Maldives makes hotspot 2009 list

16 12 2008

Industry insiders have put the Maldives on their list of the hottest destinations of 2009.

Experts from Thomson predicted that the islands would be one of the holiday hotspots of the year, with the new Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa particularly attracting tourists.

The Maldives has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the best destinations for honeymooning couples, thanks to its combination of pristine beaches, crystal clear seas and luxurious accommodation at bargain prices.

According to the tour operator compiling the list, one of the islands, Adu Atoll, offers "nearly two kilometres of beautiful, white-sand beach […] 12 hectares of lush vegetation, 17,000 coconut palms, three natural lagoons and nature trails".

Earlier this month it emerged that two of the Maldives top hotel chains are booked solid until February next year, suggesting that the credit crunch is not dampening the islands' appeal to tourists.
