2008 News Archive - Holidays - Malta tourism 'up in January'

03 03 2008

Winter breaks in Malta are becoming more popular, according to new official figures.

The country's national statistics office estimates that the number of people arriving there on holiday in January increased by 23.4 per cent on the previous year.

It follows news that 2007 was a new high for tourism in Malta, with a growth of ten per cent registered over the 12 months.

However, last month's growth was not driven by British holidaymakers, the Times of Malta reports.

The number of visitors from the UK, Libya and Russia fell during January. An increase in the number arriving from Germany, France and Spain ensured that it was a month of growth for the industry.

According to Malta's ministry for tourism and culture, the archipelago has a typically Mediterranean climate with cool, short winters.

Monthly temperatures range from 12 degrees C to 31 degrees C on average.
