2008 News Archive - Holidays - Manic March for Malta

27 05 2008

Malta is becoming an increasingly attractive proposition for tourists, with new statistics underlining its growing popularity.

Data released by the National Statistics Office showed the numbers of visitors is on the increase, as well as the cumulative amount of time spent on the island.

In March more than half a million nights were spent in accommodation such as hotels or guestrooms, with the figure of 551,449 cumulative nights for the month representing a 3.9 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2007.

Meanwhile, the average length of stay was fairly stable, with the average person spending just under a week, 5.8 nights, in Malta.

Malta's renown as a holiday spot is underlined by the official figures – 95.6 per cent of those nights spent in accommodation were by non-residents.

Carnivals and open air concerts bring the culture vultures to the island's shores, while the art collection at the National Museum of Fine Arts includes works by masters such as Caravaggio.

For those looking for something more strenuous, scuba diving is a popular sport, while yachts and jet-skis are also available.
