2008 News Archive - Holidays - May festivities in Sri Lanka

08 03 2007

Preparations are well underway for the annual celebrations of Vesak Day in Sri Lanka, which is one of the biggest events of the Buddhist calendar.

This beautiful island sits just off the south-east coast of India and every year there are four days of festivities, culminating in Vesak Day.

Celebrate the life and memory of Buddha himself the events are held in honour of his birthday, falling on the first full moon in May.

This year the main event falls on May 1st, though in leap years the celebrations are postponed until the first full moon in June.

The homes and streets of Sri Lanka are decorated with beautiful ornamental lamps throughout the celebrations, with people congregating in the streets to eat, drink and appreciate local music.

Vesak itself is a very important event for Buddhists, as through it they commemorate and celebrate the birth, life, enlightenment and death of Buddha.
