2008 News Archive - Holidays - Mexican Independence Day

14 08 2008

This month Britons enjoying holidays in Mexico are sure to be swept up in a colourful carnival atmosphere as locals celebrate Dia de la Independencia Mexicana.

Mexican Independence Day will be celebrated nationwide on September 16th, so expect military and civilian parades all over the country.

However, festivities also begin on the evening of September 15th - also known as El Grito.

On this night in 1810, Mexican revolutionary Father Hidalgo cried out to his fellow Mexicans to revolt and seek independence from Spain. Dramatic reenactments of this scene take place at city halls throughout Mexico on September 15th.

Be sure to sample some chilli in walnut sauce during the festivities as this is Mexico's national dish and is often eaten on Independence Day.

The dish is said to have been inspired by the Mexican flag and includes green chillies, a white walnut sauce and red pomegranate seeds.
