Mexico's government has made an "unprecedented" investment in tourism in the region of Huatulco, it has been reported.

According to Travel Daily News, president Felipe Calderon Hinojosa has pledged 54 million pesos (£2.5 million) to develop the coastal resort of Huatulco as a destination for tourists in 2008.

The funding will see the development of 2,500 new hotel rooms aimed at premium travellers, alongside the building of boutique hotels.

"Huatulco will be the symbol of what the government, private initiatives and the public can achieve together following a clear action plan," president Calderon stated.

Meanwhile, minister of tourism in Mexico Elizondo Torres added that the aim in the development of the region is to attract tourists from all around the world.

Huatulco was first developed as a tourist resort in the 1980s when government agency Fondo Nacional de Turismo acquired the land.
