2008 News Archive - Holidays - Mexico 'is great for whale watching'

24 11 2008

Following the success of the BBC's stunning wildlife series Oceans, a UK tour industry insider is recommending whale watching tours to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico.

According to Wildlife Worldwide, the Sea of Cortez, which seperates the Baja California peninsula from the Mexican mainland, is home to the world's greatest variety of whales and dolphins.

Many different species of the magnificent creatures, including the fin, minke and humpback whales seen on the BBC documentary, can be found migrating to and from the warm waters off the coast of Mexico and have long proved a popular attraction among children and adults alike.

An abundance of other marine species can also be found in the Sea of Cortez.

Wildlife Worldwide said: "Sightings of common, and bottle-nosed dolphins, green turtles, thresher sharks, blue marlin and even whale sharks are all possible."

Mexico has long had a reputation as an excellent holiday destination for winter beach holidays, having been recommended by TV weatherman Michael Fish as one of his favourite winter sun spots.

For those who'd like to combine a bit of wildlife spotting with lounging on the beach this winter, whale watching could be the perfect option.
