2008 News Archive - Holidays - Moors and Christians Festival brings history to life

16 04 2007

Both history buffs and sun-seekers will find the Moors and Christians Festival in Alcoi, Spain, a diverting weekend of fun.

The festival, which takes place from April 22nd to the 24th, celebrates an epic battle that took place near the town in the 13th century and features a full-scale re-enactment on the last day.

For the days leading up to the actual battle, the two opposing "armies" march up and down outside the town to the vibrant sound of drums and trumpets.

The re-enactment is taken seriously by the participants, with all ranks and members of the opposing armies represented.

To take part, one has to spend the year leading up to the event perfecting one's costume and exhaustively practicing manoeuvres.

The eighth to the 15th century, a period known as the Reconquista, saw intermittent conflict between the Moors and the Christians.

Located in the popular region of Alicante, the town of Alcoi is known for its sunny weather, beautiful rock paintings, Iberian ruins and Greco-Roman pottery.
