2008 News Archive - Holidays - More holiday options for Maldives
27 06 2008
The Maldives are set to become yet more attractive to sun seekers with the news that a host of new resorts could be opening there.
At present, 44 islands have been leased out to investors to develop as holiday havens - and the government has announced that a further 19 will be put out to tender.
Once firms have been chosen, they will then have four years to complete the work, Maldives minister of tourism Mahamoud Shougee told AFP.
The new developments will add to the 91 islands currently used as tourism hotspots in the nation. Investment has also been made into infrastructure, with work underway on ten regional airports.
Holidays in far-away destinations such as the Maldives can offer a solution to cash-strapped Brits suffering the effects of the credit crunch, one expert has claimed.
The Mirror's Doc Holiday said the all-inclusive options offer a cheaper alternative to self-catering holiday deals in the eurozone.
