Independent movie buffs looking to book a holiday in July good do a lot worse than attend the Motovun Film Festival in Croatia.

Motovun is a picturesque medieval town in Istria, an area of Croatia that features stunning scenery and beautiful summer weather.

Istria is also known for its rich wines.

The Motovun Film Festival has become a world renowned event, at which the Propeller Award for the best movie at the festival is awarded.

Previous winners of the coveted award include the respected director of Dogville, Lars Von Trier and Stephen Daldry, who directed Billy Elliott.

Over 100 movies are shown during the festival and an estimated 50,000 visitors from all over Europe and world customarily flock to the event.

Located on the hills above the Mirna river valley, Motovun keeps its shops and restaurants open 24-hours a day during the festival.

And when one gets tired of watching movies, there is an assortment of beautiful beaches less than 20 kilometres away.
