2008 News Archive - Holidays - Obamamania triggers tourism surge in Kenya

12 11 2008

There has been a surge in bookings for holidays to Kenya, following Obama's election as 44th president of the US, an industry expert has said.

"Obama roots tours" which take in a visit to his father's village in Kogelo as well as the Kakamega Forest, have been already been advertised by tour operators.

Many members of Obama's extended family still live in Kogelo, where they held victory celebrations on November 5th.

Fiona Jeffery, World Travel Market chairman, said: "His victory has rebounded around the globe to create such excited reaction that it is being used as a visitor attraction tool."

Kenya boasts a wealth of tourist attractions, including the Masai Mara game reserve, but tourism officials are seem to be hoping that Obamamania will draw even greater numbers of visitors into the east African country.

At the World Travel Markets exhibition, the Kenyan delegation was displaying a giant picture of the next president and handing out Obama badges.
