2008 News Archive - Holidays - Peruse great cinema in Cairo

23 04 2007

If the cold and damp of Europe is getting too much from November to December, why not try Cairo?

As well as the sun and sand, one will also be able to take in the renowned Cairo International Film Festival.

The festival has been running since 1976 and has gained a worldwide reputation as one of the finest around.

This year's event will feature competitions, tributes and a series of compelling films regarding the tempestuous political situation in the Middle East.

Known as the "Hollywood of the Middle East", Cairo is one of the largest exporters of Arab pop culture in the world and has had a thriving movie industry since the 1930s.

Past attendees of the festival have included Nicolas Cage, Bud Spencer, Ornella Mutti and the Italian bombshell Claudia Cardinale.

While in the city visitors should not miss the Cairo Opera House and of course a visit to the historic Nile River is a must.
