2008 News Archive - Holidays - Record year tipped for euro spending

11 03 2008

Whether heading to Majorca or Crete, one of the most important things for British holidaymakers to do is to change their sterling into the euro currency.

Marks & Spencer claims that the euro is the UK's favourite holiday currency, accounting for three out of five exchanges carried out in the UK.

And now the retailer is predicting that 2008 will be a record year for euro spending by travellers from the UK.

"With the recent wintry weather at home, and an early start on the spring/summer season, 2008 could be another record year for the euro," wagered Fraser Millar, travel money manager with the firm.

According to the Office for National Statistics, British tourists spent the equivalent of almost £18 million in euros while abroad last year.

Launched in 1999, the euro is used by around 320 million citizens in 15 member states of the EU.
