2008 News Archive - Holidays - Rest and relaxation in Crete

23 02 2007

The beautiful Greek island of Crete is an ideal holiday destination for those looking to unwind, according to a Telegraph travel review.

Holidaymaker Adrian Bridge reports that, even in the middle of summer, "obvious examples of authentic Cretan life" are plentiful. This authenticity is something that people tend forget, due to tales of wild parties and booze cruises in Malia.

Most of Crete is in fact very tranquil and the picturesque beaches are ideal for families and couples looking to unwind for a week or two.

"There were occasional bursts of activity," Mr Bridge recalled, reflecting on a dinghy ride, waterskiing and parasailing. Many of Crete's beaches are excellent for watersports, but there are always quiet retreats away from the shrieking and splashing.

In truth, there are very few parts of the island that have been taken over by tourists, which contributes to its enduring appeal. Even Malia, the island's party capital, has a quaint old town full of charisma and tradition. Malia's beach is also an attractive little spot, made memorable by the small chapel on the island at sea.

A visit to the Venetian castle in Rethymno is also worthwhile and the town itself is truly fascinating.

Rethymno holds a wine festival in July, where visitors can sample a number of rare wines and even buy a couple of bottles to take home.
