2008 News Archive - Holidays - Rome to 'celebrate' birthday in April

22 01 2009

Travellers visiting Rome on family holidays in April may be able to join in the annual celebrations for the city's birthday.

Each year on April 21st, Romans celebrate the birth of the Eternal City which was founded by Romulus in 753BC.

A series of events will be taking place throughout Rome at venues including the Roman Forum and the Campidoglio.

The River Tiber will be the scene of a spectacular fireworks display, while the Aventine Hill will be covered in long-burning candles.

Other birthday events will include gladiator shows, parades and traditional Roman banquets.

Local historical societies will also make a number of public speeches, according to Whatsonwhen.

Other events taking place in Rome over the next few months include the Rome Marathon, the Primo Maggio Music Festival and the Good Friday Procession, all of which are scheduled to take place in March.
