2008 News Archive - Holidays - See the unusual in Spain

10 04 2007

Those who fancy a trip to Spain during April but are after a taste of culture rather than the usual sangrias on the beach may want to check out the beautiful and vibrant Santa Faz pilgrimage.

The pilgrimage is one of Spain's oldest and most sacred traditions and the Santa Faz is the country's second oldest.

On April 19th every year, over 20,000 people walk to the Monasterio de Santa Faz from Alicante's town hall, some 80 kilometres (km) away, stopping for the paraeta breakfrast of hot anise rolls and mistela wine.

Supposedly the monastery contains the veil with which Veronica dapped at Jesus' face as he carried his cross.

Whether one is religious or not, the pilgrimage is one of the most beautiful spectacles in Spain and really should not be missed. And the fact that this particular pilgrimage takes place in one of Spain's most beautiful regions is an added bonus.

Nestled in the heart of Catalonia, Alicante is one of the fastest growing regions in Spain, as tourists flock to the Costa Blanca year after year for its lovely beaches and and tasty wine.

If one is lucky enough to get out to Alicante, one should be sure not too miss the local speciality of honey and nougat, truly a treat for the taste buds.

The region is also famous for its leather, textiles and pottery.
