Bulgaria's reputation as one of Europe's most exciting destinations is set for another boost this winter as thousands of skiers take to the slopes.

Already famed for its popular Black Sea resorts, Bulgaria is also emerging as a leading choice for winter sports enthusiasts and its top three resorts are all gearing up for the arrival of the first load of tourists in the next week or so.

Bansko, the most developed of the country's ski resorts, will open its ski season on December 16th. Several major investment projects in recent years have allowed Bansko to stake its claim as a genuine alternative to the likes of Val d'Isere, Verbier and Chamonix and official estimates suggest that visitor numbers this year will soar well beyond previous records.

Borovets and Pamporovo – two of the other major ski resorts in Bulgaria – remain in the shadow of Bansko, but both have become extremely popular with beginners in recent years.

Employees at Pamporovo may well find life a little difficult in the early weeks of the forthcoming season, however, with news that artificial snow has been required in the absence of any notable snowfall.

While it may never outmuscle its mightier cousins in France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, there is little doubt that Bulgaria will become a major player in the world of winter sports in the years ahead. One of its major advantages is that prices are still refreshingly reasonable and this alone will surely guarantee it remains popular with ski enthusiasts the world over.
