2008 News Archive - Holidays - Spring equinox in Mexico

13 03 2007

The highlight of the Mayan calendar is set to delight modern holidaymakers in the state of Yucatan, Mexico later this month.

Visitors to the El Castillo pyramid in Chichen Itza can witness the spring equinox phenomenon, which is visible from March 19th to 21st.

At the nearby ancient town of Dzibilchaltun, the official time for the equinox is 05:00 GMT, while speedy travellers can see the same spectacle again at sunset in Chichen Itza.

During this time, the sun casts its rays on to the pyramid, forming seven triangles resembling the body of a serpent.

Legend has it that the snake is trying to make it to the well of sacrifice.

El Castillo is one of the greatest surviving Mayan monuments and a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Other attractions in the Yucatan area include restored haciendas, colonial cities and natural environments.

The main cities of Campeche, Merida, Playa del Carmen and Cancun have all modern facilities including airports, hotels and nightclubs, while smaller towns such as Valladolid and Tulum boast beautiful architecture and local artisans selling traditional products.
