2008 News Archive - Holidays - Sri Lanka offers 'stunning' walks

24 11 2008

Sri Lanka, renowned for its sandy, palm-fringed beaches, is also a stunning place for walking holidays, according to one UK tour operator.

The idyllic Indian Ocean isle has long been a popular destination for UK tourists looking for some rest and relaxation, but now Walks Worldwide has recommended Sri Lanka as a destination for tourists who want to be active between sessions of lounging on the beach.

Kandy's Udawattakele Forest Reserve offers stunning walks, according to the operator, as does the rock fortress of Sigiriya, 'the fortress in the sky', which boasts well-sculpted geometric gardens.

Walks Worldwide said: "Adam's Peak (2,225m), Sri Lanka's highest mountain, is sacred to four of the world's major religions - Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. [It] offers breathtaking sunrise panoramas and perhaps some enlightenment!"

Sri Lanka also boasts an abundance of wildlife and enjoys a reputation as an excellent destination for eco-tourism.

Earlier this month the Sri Lanka tourism promotions bureau announced its 'earth lung project', which it claims represents the future of sustainable tourism.
