2008 News Archive - Holidays - Sterling performance 'boosts Turkish tourism'

21 07 2008

The performance of sterling against the euro in recent months has seen interest in visiting Turkey increase considerably among British tourists, it has been claimed.

According to Turkish Hoteliers Federation (Turofed), parts of Europe where the euro is in use have become less attractive to potential British visitors who in many cases have turned their attention to Turkey as a holiday destination.

It has been claimed that traditional favourites among Britons holidaymakers have seen a fall in the number of visitors from the UK they attract so far this year, while the sun-drenched state of Turkey is growing in popularity.

Ahmet Barut, the chairperson of Turofed told Anatolian Agency: "Such interest of British travellers stems from the fact that Europe is now much more expensive for them."

"British pound's losing value compared to Euro helped the Turkish tourism sector," he added.

Catholics from the UK could have added reason to visit Turkey this year because Pope Benedict XVI recently declared 2008 the year of Saint Paul, who was born in the city of Tarsus in the south of the country.
