2008 News Archive - Holidays - Surfers congregate in Florida

11 01 2007

A major surfing competition will come to an end in Florida today, when one talented athlete walks away with a cheque for $75,000.

The O'Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro contest welcomes some of the world's most capable surfers to the Sunshine State, including Cory Lopez and Timmy Reyes.

Hundreds of spectators will also be out in force as they admire the dare-devil feats of these fearless individuals who take on some of the area's very best waves.

Sebastian Inlet is one of the world's most popular surfing locations and visitors will see local experts perfecting their tricks around this area throughout the year. It is also, however, an extremely popular fishing destination and thousands more pack their fishing tackle when holidaying in this part of the world.

But for many, Florida's outstanding beaches will remain a location for lounging , sunbathing, enjoying the odd ice cream and relaxing with friends.

A quick glance at the 2005 list of America's top ten beaches by Dr Stephen P Leatherman (Dr Beach) gives an idea of just how fortunate Floridians are when it comes to the coastline.

Fort DeSoto Park at North Beach in St Petersburg topped the list and Caladesi Island in State Park was awarded fourth place. Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne also made an appearance on the list, placing Florida on a par with Hawaii in terms of the quality of beaches.
