2008 News Archive - Holidays - Swim with the cows in Florida's Crystal River

22 03 2007

Florida offers a myriad of different activities for the thousands of visitors that flock to the sunshine state ever year, but surely none can be as awe-inspiring as swimming with the manatees in the Crystal River.

Every year between November and April hundreds of manatees, nicknamed seacows, congregate in the Crystal River.

These gentle giants have been around for an estimated 45 million years and their majesty and friendliness never fail to impress those that have the privilege of encountering them.

Weighing close to 2,000 kilograms and measuring a maximum of ten feet long, manatees are completely vegetarian and spend hours grazing on the sea floor. They are also curious and will often swim up to humans to investigate.

The rest of the time they mostly spend sleeping, being known to kip up to half the day.

Tragically, this magnificent sea mammal is endangered, mainly due to the fact that they are extremely vulnerable to being struck by the propellers of watercraft around the Florida coast.
