2008 News Archive - Holidays - Tenerife is 'ideal for city breaks'

28 01 2009

Tenerife may be best renowned for its sandy beaches and its year round sun, but one leading travel writer has claimed that its many other attractions also make it an ideal spot to take a city break.

Writing in the Guardian, Philip Smith said that Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz boasts some fantastic architecture, including the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, designed by the same swiss architects who made Beijing's bird nest stadium.

He claimed that the island's vibrant local cultural scene, which mixes the best of mainland Spanish and Latin American cultures, also makes it an excellent place to visit.

Mr Smith added: "The Canary Islands have always been a stepping stone between the Old and New Worlds. […] If you know where to look, it's easy to enjoy the good weather and low cost of living while avoiding the resorts."

Recently, Tenerife's tourism board launched a new advertising campaign aimed at showcasing the other side of the island.
