2008 News Archive - Holidays - Tenerife tops Christmas getaway list

19 12 2006

Tenerife, the largest of the seven Canary Islands, has emerged as the favourite destination among Brits looking for a little sun this Christmas.

According to figures from Manchester Airport, 150,000 passengers will use its facilities during the final three days before Christmas, representing an increase of five per cent from the same period last year.

And like last year, those travelling from Manchester are more keen to enjoy the delights of Tenerife than any other destination. The Canarian Statistics Centre reported last year that 1,600,000 Brits holidayed in Tenerife during 2005 and it seems clear that the island remains exceptionally popular in winter as well as during the hotter summer months.

While Tenerife is of course famed for its black sand beaches, many have been regenerated in recent years to satisfy the demand for golden sands. Teresitas Beach is a classic example and it remains one of the island's most popular resorts.

Other popular beaches include Roque Beach, which is popular with surfers, and Jardin Beach, which has undergone a major transformation in recent times.

Excellent daytrips can also be taken in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital, as well as Puerto de la Cruz, which is home to Cesar Manrique's outstanding Lago Martianez.
