17 12 2007
The Gambia is becoming an "increasingly popular" holiday destination in Africa, it has been reported.
The comment was made by a spokesperson for lastminute.com, who also reported that interest in holiday bookings for summer 2008 is likely to begin in January.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson also noted that Egypt is likely to do "very well" among holidaymakers in 2008.
"People are looking at going further away than ever before ... in Africa, the Gambia is increasingly ... popular," she added.
Other destinations predicted for popularity in the new year included the US, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and the Maldives.
The Gambia calls itself "the smiling coast of Africa" and is a six-hour flight away from Europe.
It is the smallest country on mainland Africa and is situated on the western coast.
