2008 News Archive - Holidays - Tourism "faring well" in Mauritius

11 12 2008

Mauritius continues to be a hotspot for tourists looking to soak up some winter sun despite the global economic downturn, a local newspaper has reported.

According to Le Defi, the pull of the Indian Ocean islands is so strong that, even in the midst of the credit crunch, more tourists visited the islands last month than during the same period in 2007.

Overall, 757,688 tourists visited Mauritius between January and September this year compared with 726,065 in 2007 - an increase of 4.4 per cent.

The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority is looking to develop the attraction of the islands even further over the coming year, by persuading visitors to come from as far away as China and India.

Recently, it was revealed that Martina Navratilova, nine times Wimbledon champion and a finalist on I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! visited Mauritius to relax before her ordeal in the Australian jungle.
