2008 News Archive - Holidays - Tourism grows in spite of economic woes

04 07 2008

Tourism is continuing to grow in 2008 despite wider economic concerns, according to new research.

The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) reports that early results show "firm" international tourism demand, with the sector growing by five per cent during the first quarter of this year.

Fastest reported growth was in North-East and South Asia, the Middle East and Central and South America.

However, secretary general of UNWTO Francesco Frangialli noted that the next few months would be crucial in monitoring the impact of the economic situation on tourism.

"The extent of any tourism demand adjustment and its consequences for the sector will depend on how the economy evolves and consumers react, both of which are directly interrelated to oil and food prices," he commented.

While all areas of the world reported growth, double-digit growth was reported in China, the USA, Jamaica, Bulgaria, Malta, Montenegro and Turkey as well as Egypt and Morocco among others.
