2008 News Archive - Holidays - Tourism to be 'Majorca's saviour'

07 11 2008

While the global economy continues to cause concern, Majorca has at least one reason to be cheerful - the strength of its tourism sector.

The president of the Majorcan Chamber of commerce Juan Gual believes that the holiday industry is so healthy that it will go some way to preventing the island from slipping into recession, the Majorca Daily Bulletin reports.

Economic growth of 0.8 per cent is predicted for Majorca, so Mr Gual's words will soothe the ears of many working and living there.

He said that he has heard that many Germans have already booked their holidays for next summer - a trend which the Bulletin has also identified among British travellers.

A study by Imaginative Traveller recently found that 90 per cent of Britons are unlikely to cut back on their main holidays, despite the problems with the economy.

Nevertheless, many admitted that they could scale back on shorter breaks.
