2008 News Archive - Holidays - Tourists flock to Tunisia

11 11 2008

Tunisia is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination and is enjoying a tourist boom despite the credit crunch, recently released statistics reveal.

Khalil Lajimi, the country's minister for tourism, said in a recent press conference that some seven million tourists will have visited Tunisia by the end of this year.

According to Reuters, the number of tourists who have visited Tunisia this year so far is up three per cent on the same period last year, suggesting that the popularity of this winter sun destination has not diminished despite the credit crunch.

Overall Mr Lajimi said the figures marked a 25 per cent increase since 2001, according to Middle East Online.

Mr Lajimi estimated that revenues from tourism had reached 3.4 billion dinars (£1.6 billion) and predicted that the sector would continue to grow.

These estimates indicate how attractive holidays to Tunisia, with its sandy beaches and year round sun, are becoming.
