2008 News Archive - Holidays - Tourists still flocking to Portugal

02 12 2008

While the doom and gloom of the credit crunch might have settled over much of the UK, sunny Portugal has reported some brighter news - the numbers of tourists flocking to the country is still growing.

According to Reuters, tourist numbers are not increasing at the same record-breaking rates as last year, but 2008 has still seen significant growth, with tourist numbers rising 3.8 per cent to 5.8 million between January and September this year.

Portugal is cheaper to visit than most western European countries, Reuters said, yet still offers the incredible attractions of Iberian beaches, warm weather and historic sites.

The news agency reported experts as saying: "Portugal's location, at no more than three hours' flight from major European centres, should lure many beach and sun holidaymakers who may cut planned holidays to exotic destinations."

Earlier this week a survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers showed that many UK tourists still consider their main holiday to be their most important spending priority.
