2008 News Archive - Holidays - Traditional Christmas in Spain

10 12 2007

If you are among those who hold the belief that Christmas has become commercialised and has lost its true meaning then a holiday to Spain this festive season could be in order.

Religious festivals have survived for centuries in the sunny country as have more secular traditions, such as the consumption of twelve grapes at Nochevieja or New Year's Eve.

This practice sees the participant munch one grape on each stroke of midnight, with victory in this task guaranteeing a year of prosperity.

Other Christmas celebrations include the Feast of the Three Kings on January 6th as the three wise men are remembered for their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

This tradition, perhaps overlooked somewhat in the UK, holds a special importance for Spaniards as it is Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar who bring Christmas presents to good children rather than Father Christmas.

Earlier this year the Association of British Travel Agents reported that Spain is the most popular holiday destination for Britons over Christmas.
