2008 News Archive - Holidays - Travel writer gives top tips for saving in Italy

16 01 2009

A UK travel writer has compiled a list of top tips for tourists who want to beat the credit crunch by taking a cheap holiday to Italy.

Gill Charlton, writing in the Telegraph, said: "Who can resist [Italy's] charms; ancient hilltop towns rising from sunflower fields, unrivalled classical and renaissance treasures, a pleasure house of food and wine? And, of course, the warm, expansive welcome of the Italians."

Ms Charlton admitted that the relative weakness of the pound against the euro may have made Italy seem like an expensive destination, but said this did not have to be the case.

Heading to Umbria for holidays rather than the tourist trap of Tuscany could help travellers save and for those who want to lounge on a beach, resorts in Puglia and Catania cost less than those on the Neapolitan Riviera.

Ms Charlton also recommended that when in Rome, tourists should buy a Roma pass, which gives discounts on several museums, archaeological sites and free public transport.

Telegraph readers recently voted Italy as their favourite European holiday destination.
