2008 News Archive - Holidays - Travelling without insurance 'is crazy'

30 09 2008

Travelling abroad without insurance cover is "crazy", it has been claimed.

John Boyles, account manager at Endsleigh Insurance, said that people often mistakenly believe that reciprocal health arrangements between countries will protect them, however, this is not always the case.

"It's vital. If you travel abroad without insurance than in my opinion you must be crazy. The costs can be enormous and nobody is exempt or immune from something untoward happening to them," he explained.

Mr Boyles' comments come after a recent survey by American Express Insurance Services revealed that 24 per cent of people plan to travel without cover this year.

He added that travel insurance is also essential for short breaks and should not be overlooked due to the current economic climate.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the average cost of treating a broken leg in the US is £24,000, while a week's stay in a Greek hospital can cost between £4,000 and £5,000.
