2008 News Archive - Holidays - Turkey looks to attract culture vultures

09 02 2009

As Istanbul begins the buildup towards its tenure as European Capital of Culture, which begins in 2010, Turkey is looking to build on one of its best-ever years for tourism with an impressive programme of cultural events.

Film festivals will be taking place around the country at various stages of the year, with Eskisehir and the capital Ankara both welcoming international events in March and Izmir and Istanbul hosting festivals in April.

Meanwhile, Istanbul's galleries will be displaying some of the best work by local artists like Mehmet Turgut and Osman Ilder Yalin as well as welcoming international contributions for the Istanbul Biennial.

The Turkish tourist board said in a statement: "Not only does Turkey offer great value, it's a country bubbling with new-found energy and confidence, with an ever-growing cultural & sporting events calendar."

Recently, the Post Office revealed that it had seen a dramatic increase in the amount of Turkish lira purchased, as savvy tourists flocked to take advantage of the currently favourable pound-to-lira exchange rate.
