2008 News Archive - Holidays - Turkish holidays 'going cheap' as lira loses value

04 11 2008

Tourists travelling to Turkey may get more bang for their buck this Christmas, thanks to the weakening of the Turkish lira against the pound.

According to the Post Office bureau de change, the Turkish lira has weakened against sterling by ten per cent compared with the same period last year.

A weakening lira may mean that tourists enjoying Turkey's winter sun save on their day to day costs as their pounds go further.

Helen Warburton, Post Office head of travel, said that purchases of Turkish lira had risen by 52 per cent as savvy travellers took advantage of the favourable rates.

Despite the credit crunch, Ms Warburton said: "There is still good news for holidaymakers who watch the exchange rates carefully and plan their trips accordingly. The Turkish lira is a case in point."

Turkey has long been a popular destination for Brits seeking to escape the cold of Christmas.

Recently the Turkish Daily News reported that tourism in the Antalya area was flourishing this year, despite the global economic downturn.
